ThursdayâÂ?Â?s Religion News Roundup: A pro-gay Chick-fil-A; a âÂ?Â?Magenta Yenta;âÂ?Â? birth control mandate 9/11

Is Billy Graham writing his own stuff? What if the Olympics were organized by religion instead of by nation? Southern Baptist culture warrior Richard Land is quitting his day job, but not going anywhere.

What if the Olympics were organized by religion instead of by nation? To a degree it is, for some of us.

The Catholic Diocese of Lansing is pretty happy about U.S. gymnast and parishioner Jordyn Wieber, and of course Jews are still kvelling over Aly Raisman.

Here in Brooklyn, the “magenta yenta,” a.k.a. 22-year-old Mindy Meyer, an Orthodox Jew making an unorthodox run for the state senate, is gaining national attention. Meyer – pictured here – says that is prompting her to tone things down. Too bad.

The winner of today’s Republican congressional primary in Tennessee may be the candidate who shows she hates the Murfreesboro mosque more than her opponent.

The Southern Baptist culture warrior Richard Land is quitting his day job, but not going anywhere: “I believe the ‘culture war’ is a titanic spiritual struggle for our nation’s soul and as a minister of Christ’s Gospel, I have no right to retire from that struggle,”

Liberal Christian leaders don’t like the GOP tax bill. “Simply morally reprehensible,” said the Rev. Jim Wallis.

Is Billy Graham writing his own stuff these days? A former Graham employee doubts it, after Graham joined the campaign to support Chick-fil-A after criticism of owner Dan Cathy’s stand against gay marriage.

Thought that whole fast food culture war thing was finally over? Here’s one more item to chew on: A New Hampshire Chick-Fil-A restaurant will be a sponsor of the state’s gay pride festival on Aug. 11.

In the religious freedom battle over the contraception mandate, bishops are winning Catholic hearts but Obama is winning their votes.

Oh, and the contraception mandate is not just like Pearl Harbor, it’s also like 9/11.

Humanists are mourning Gore Vidal, man of letters and since 2009 honorary president of the American Humanist Association.
