Muslim views of the Apocalypse

(RNS) Muslim and Christian views of the Apocalypse bear remarkable similarities, albeit with a different ending.

As in the Bible's Book of Revelation, Islamic tradition speaks of signs -- unnatural disasters, wars and moral decay -- that will portend the Last Days. And like Christians, many Muslims believe that Jesus, whom they call Isa, will return to defeat the Antichrist.

Contemporary Muslim apocalyptists have even borrowed from their Christian counterparts, such as Hal Lindsay, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, to discern the dates of the Antichrist's arrival, said David Cook, an expert on Islamic eschatology and associate professor at Rice University.

"There are Muslim apocalyptic readings of the book of Daniel, Ezekiel and Revelation," says Cook. "The only difference is the `good guys' are Muslims, not Christians."

The Muslim Jesus destroys the cross and the swine, symbols of Christian innovations, and converts Christians to Islam, said Abdulaziz Sachedina, a professor of Islamic studies at the University of Virginia. Whether he does so violently or not is a matter of debate.

In Islamic tradition, Jesus is joined by a figure named the Mahdi, who helps subdue Satan and rid the world of corruption and injustice.

Some Muslims don't like the idea of Jesus playing the messianic hero, and have thus assigned a larger role to the Mahdi, said Cook. That belief is strong among Shiites, particularly the "Twelvers" in Iran, where President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has often spoke of the Mahdi's return.

Twelvers believe that the Mahdi is the 12th imam -- hence their name -- a descendant of Prophet Muhammad who has been hidden since the 9th century.

In addition to Iran, faith in the Mahdi's imminent arrival is widespread in Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey and Tunisia, according to a 2012 Pew Research center poll.

  1. Mahdi and Isa (Islamic Jesus) are Antichrist and false prophet. It’s remarkable, how islamic apolypse is mirror image of christian apocalypse, except good guys are the bad guys.

  2. the only Muslim story that the Jesus will come back to destroy the cross and he will war the evil on the earth

  3. yes , he will broke it cos one اث Free people from worshiping fetish

  4. alaa . ” the only muslim story that the Jesus will come back to destroy the cross and he will war the evil on the earth ..” Please give us the source of your information. ie, Reference.where it can be read.

  5. Matthew 3:17 And lo the voice of God spake from Heaven, “This is my Son, in whom, I am well pleased.” This passage did not indicate that any other man, woman, thing, or personage was as pleasing to Him. Idolatry is not funny or should be taken lightly. Idol worship is a real problem and many try to ‘attach’ a righteous meaning to it by their own words, but none will ever be more righteous than Jesus and His ‘match’ can never be found. The sky can and will fall upon the heads of those who love a lie and they still will not call upon Jesus. ***More room in Heaven for me to walk freely without them, I say.***

  6. boy are the muslims going to be surprised when the christians are raptured and they are left here to face nightmare of their madhi/anti christ. the anti christ and the false prophet are here.

  7. “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”
    Numbers 23:19

Or…the Christians surprised when Jesus comes back and snaps that cross in two? I find it curious that a Christian wants to lecture us on idol worship, when she is so clearly worshipping a man instead of God alone.

“And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” Mark 17 – 20.

The commandments were good enough for Jesus, peace be upon him, they’re good enough for me!

  8. Twisting doctrine does not bring you righteousness.

  9. Before talking about antichrist, or islam, you should understand your own religion” christianity” is emerged in the middle east, and not Europe. So Judaism, christianity and Islam are one religion, the word Islam means to submit yourself to God. Islam is an ancient religion of Adam , Noah, and Abraham Phrophets of God the Almighty.

  10. CarlyBGood… Let’s understand that Muslims love Jesus/Isa alaahi Salaam as well as all the Profets and with Muhammad Alaahi Salaam being the seal of all Profets! Human beings say blasphemy with their tongue because of the way God sent Profet Jesus here with no father inpregnating his Mother! But why are we not more fascinated with the creation of Adam Alaahi Salaam who was made by Gods personal hands and didn’t have a Mother nor Father? To associate anything with God as him fathering an offspring is total disrespect to our Creator. When he,Jesus/Isa Alaahi Salaam does return he will clear up the lie placed upon him throughout time.THERE IS NOTHING IN EXISTENCE WORTHY OF WORSHIP EXCEPT GOD!

  11. @Ergon

Mehdi: redeemer of all that is good (Good)

Isa: Arabic name for Jesus of Nazareth (Good)

Masih Al Dajjal: Literally “The False Messiah” the false Jesus (Bad)

    Hopefully that was simple enough.

  12. Funny how there’s the false prophet and the false messiah on a white horse. That is two (2).

There is only one Christ (1) on a donkey.

    Hopefully that is simple enough
