COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A northern Kentucky bishop has apologized for his diocese’s reaction to a videotaped encounter last week at the Lincoln Memorial between a group of high school students and Native American marchers.

An initial joint statement from the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School on Saturday had condemned the students for their actions. A statement released Tuesday said the diocese would initiate a third-party investigation of the incident.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the Most Rev. Roger Foys released a statement Friday apologizing to Covington families and to anyone offended by either statement. Foys says the diocese was “bullied” and reacted “prematurely.”

The students were widely criticized after an online video appeared to show them mocking a Native American activist. Subsequent videos showed a more complicated three-way confrontation involving a black religious sect as well.

  • Those poor, poor white privilege boys and that poor, poor white privilege Catholic boys high school and that poor, poor diocese have suffered so terribly. But everything will get better. President P-Grabber is going to Make America White Again.

  • Good call, Bishop Foys.

“Covington isn’t about facts, but about identity politics.” — Tucker Carlson

  • Of course it is about identity politics. That is why the kids put on the Make America White Again hats in the first place.

  • The liberals managed to assure those children received death threats, along with threats to their school.

  • They wore no such hats. They are a product of your fevered imagination, and a measure of your own bigotry.

  • It is really hard to imagine more profound ineptitude than “We’re sorry this happened——oh, wait—–We’re taking that back”. This totally compounds the episode and confirms the anyway-creeping perception that Organized White Church is now in utter subjection to America’s Trumpian shouter-pundits.

  • The phrase “Organized White Church” demonstrates your total
subjection to America’s left-wing racist non-thinkers in a sorry spectacle of virtue signaling and pecksniffian political correctness.

  • Who do liberals care about, themselves. They support abnormalities and immoralities for when theirs comes along, they hope another liberal will support theirs. That’s how they play the game – “my kink is not your kink, but yours is ok too”

  • Great: of an extent, amount, or intensity considerably above the normal or average.

White: of the color of milk or fresh snow, due to the reflection of most wavelengths of visible light.

You either need a new dictionary, or another ESL class, LOL.

  • Maybe the bishop finally grew a pair, and is righting the wrong he did in throwing under the bus kids who did nothing wrong.

  • Ever notice the people most supportive of discrimination and public recognition of bigotry are always talking about identity politics as if they are not engaging in them?

    Of course you haven’t.

  • So, in your opinion getting death threats is a benefit?

Btw, does rubber lizard suit restrict blood flow to your brain?

    It looks like it would.

  • You have that right:

    https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bigot

    bigot – noun

“a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (such as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance”

Let’s see among the groups he/she/it regards or treats with hatred and intolerance are whites and Catholics.

This poster was a regular fixture at National Catholic Reporter Comments until it closed.

  • Saying “the bishop is kowtowing to his wealthy white Catholic supporters” is like saying that the sun comes up in the east.

  • I hope they benefit … especially since gullible Tater here was of course the first to broadcast the latest lib snafu in this neck of the woods.

  • BiO was right there as well.

They’re still at it on some of the other discussion fora:

    https://disqus.com/home/discussion/bilgrimage/bilgrimage_some_final_takeaways_from_the_covington_catholic_story_conservatives_have_realized_they_c/

It reminds me of the parody of the famous but unattributable “A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.”

A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to kick a child.

And, boy, they’re still kicking him.

  • Saying “Saying ‘the bishop is kowtowing to his wealthy white Catholic supporters’ is like saying that the sun comes up in the east.” is like saying “I am a not very bright anti-Catholic who does not wish to be disturbed … by facts.”

  • Whatever his reason for the “apology” — it’s reprehensible. Those boys behaved badly. The adults who supervised them behave even worse in permitting the entire thing to take place. And the bishop is making everything even worse by not recognizing the bad behavior of the adults and their charges. He is reinforcing the idea that rich white boys can behave however they will, and they will get away with it. Shame on him!

  • Maybe if those kids had done anything wrong, you might have a point.

But since all they did was suffer vile and homophobic attacks by the proven liar Phillips & o, as well as the Black Hebrew Israelites hate group, you have no point at all.

    So: Shame on YOU, Bigot!

  • What is incomprehensible is despite the facts, the new information which makes it clear these boys stood waiting for bus and behaved like boys standing waiting for a bus, yahoos continue to write crap like “Those boys behaved badly.”

There are entire blogs where the devotees of unreality gather to carp and dissemble about imagined wrongs:

I had an opportunity to talk with a good friend who teaches at a Catholic school in the Diocese of Covington.

As of last night, Covington Catholic was closed, Covington Latin across the street from the diocesan office was closed, both schools cancelled all sporting events, the diocesan offices are operating with hired security, there have a number of bomb threats at both high schools, and so on.

  • There was nothing “complicated” about the interaction between the students and the Black religious sect. The Blacks were harassing the students with vile racist and homophobic insults, and with the permission of a counselor they responded with school chants.

Hopefully, the bishop will have learned to wait a day or so before responding to similar events in the future, just to see what new information comes out–seeing how the press has abandoned all pretense of caring about the truth of anything they throw out so long as it embarrasses Trump and anyone that might support him, or on the Right generally.

  • What the Bishop needs to address is why those students attended that rally as a school sanctioned field trip. People who know they have done wrong will do anything to try to prove that they didn’t. Such as one Catholic priest who wrote the students were sent in hopes of learning about other opinions in order to find some common ground. You don’t learn about other people’s opinions in a mob. You learn what other people think in small group and one on one encounters, not mob action! Others have claimed that the others behaved worse and provoked the teens. I was always taught that because someone else does something doesn’t mean it is right for you to do the same thing! The school counselor should have counseled the students to walk away–NOT to escalate the situation with school chants! The Bishop has a great deal to apologize for and so does the school and the parents of those boys!

  • “What the Bishop needs to address is why those students attended that rally as a school sanctioned field trip.”

No, he does not need to address it.

Catholic grade schools, high schools, and colleges send groups each year to the March in January and have since its inception. Many parishes also send delegations.

“People who know they have done wrong will do anything to try to prove that they didn’t.”

Atheists, anti-Catholics, LGBT activitists, pro-abortion advocates, and other Luddites and lunatics who hate everything these boys stand for, their religious beliefs, their positions on abortion will write things like:

“People who know they have done wrong will do anything to try to prove that they didn’t.”

rather than just face the fact they spun this one wrong.

“You don’t learn about other people’s opinions in a mob.”

The boys were not part of a mob. They were standing waiting for a bus to pick them, acting lawfully, chaperoned, and minding their own business.

“The school counselor should have counseled the students to walk away–NOT to escalate the situation with school chants!”

The boys escalated nothing. They were waiting for a bus at a designated stop. They were peacefully assembled, which they have a constitutional right to do. They had every right to be there and every reason not to leave.

“The Bishop has a great deal to apologize for and so does the school and the parents of those boys!”

No, the media that spun this story, and individuals like yourself who continue to try to keep the spin going, are the people who have a great to apologize for.

To quote Joseph Welch’s comments to Senator Joe McCarthy on June 9, 1954:

“Let us not assassinate this lad further … . You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?”

    https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/minute/Have_you_no_sense_of_decency.htm

  • Don’t play dumb.

They went to express their opposition to abortion, just like everyone else. It was a thoroughly Christian thing to do.

They were waiting there for their bus, as they were instructed to do. Singing school songs in response to being taunted by irresponsible adult agitators with racist and homophobic taunts while waiting for their bus was a reasoned and moderate form of response. Only a total loon would consider singing harmless school songs a dangerous escalation of the situation.

In short, they did nothing wrong, either in attending the March, or afterwards. They have nothing to apologize for. You simply find the cause they stood for reprehensible, and would prefer all such people were not seen in the public square – hence your unreasoning antipathy towards them.

  • No, I am referring to hacks that think “Great = White”, you know, liberal racists like JJ & Co.

  • The drummer appears to have committed a misdemeanor. The applicable District of Columbia law:

    § 22–3133. Stalking.

    (a) It is unlawful for a person to purposefully engage in a course of conduct directed at a specific individual:

    (1) With the intent to cause that individual to:

    (A) Fear for his or her safety or the safety of another person;

    (B) Feel seriously alarmed, disturbed, or frightened; or

    (C) Suffer emotional distress;

    (2) That the person knows would cause that individual reasonably to:

    (A) Fear for his or her safety or the safety of another person;

    (B) Feel seriously alarmed, disturbed, or frightened; or

    (C) Suffer emotional distress; … Etc.

I used to keep the DC Police and Metro Police number on my phone’s speed dial for situations just like this.

These apologias for nutcases who accost people in DC indicate a radical break with reality on the part of their authors.

  • The fact that a all boys high school is in operation in 2019 says it all. Such an operation has no business being in a democracy, but is better suited for a theocracy such as Saudi Arabia.

  • It says that if someone like yourself is born in 2019, and their parents can afford it, they can wind up not making whatever mistake your parents made – probably involving public schools.

It is extremely suited to a nation with the First Amendment, which protects those with religious beliefs from people like yourself.

  • As someone of even your limited intelligence should be able to clearly see, neither of those UP votes was cast by me.

  • There are plenty of all boys and all girls schools around, of various affiliations.

The fact that you are intolerant of other people’s choices that do not accord with your own shows you to be unsuited for being in a free democracy.

  • CORRECTION: There’s no aristocatsy in Saudi Arabia.

“The Aristocats is a 1970 American animated romantic adventure musical comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution. The 20th Disney animated feature film, the film is based on a story by Tom McGowan and Tom Rowe, and revolves around a family of aristocratic cats, and how an alley cat acquaintance helps them after a butler has kidnapped them to gain his mistress’s fortune which was intended to go to them. The film features the voices of Eva Gabor, Hermione Baddeley, Phil Harris, Dean Clark, Sterling Holloway, Scatman Crothers, and Roddy Maude-Roxby.”

  • The media that spun this story, and individuals like yourself who continue to try to keep the spin going, are the people who have a great deal to apologize for.
