RNS-Shul-Funding: Jewish and Latino legislators announce funding to renovate century-old synagogue in LA’s Eastside
LOS ANGELES (RNS) — Legislators from the Latino and Jewish caucuses on Tuesday, Aug. 10 will gather in the Eastside of Los Angeles to announce $14.9 million in funding to renovate the century-old Breed Street Shul — the religious and cultural anchor of the Eastside’s early Jewish community. The budget allocation will help transform the facility into a shared multipurpose space that will honor the Jewish history of Boyle Heights as well as the area’s residents that are now largely Latino. By Alejandra Molina. 700 words. RNS-Reese-Oped: The climate apocalypse is real, and it is coming
(RNS) — The report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, released Aug. 9, makes clear that global warming is no longer a theory, it is a proven fact. Science is telling us what has happened and what will happen. Science also is telling us how to stop it from getting worse. As Pope Francis has taught us in his 2015 encyclical, “Laudato Si’”, this will take both individual and systemic conversion because it will require sacrifice on an enormous scale.
