Wednesday’s Religion News Roundup: Chick-fil-A; anti-Obama pastors; Olympic religion

It could get pretty crowded at Chick-fil-A today — and not because of the fast-food restaurant's famous waffle fries.

Today is the Mike Huckabee-spearheaded “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.” More than 500,000 people have pledged to show up or support the chicken chain via social media.

On Friday, gay and lesbian couples plan to hold “kiss-ins” at Chick-fil-A locations nationwide to protest remarks by CEO Dan Cathy.

Cardinal Francis George of Chicago has gotten into the action as well, lambasting Windy City Mayor Rahm Emanuel for saying “Chick-fil-A’s values are not Chicago’s values.”

“I was born and raised here, and my understanding of being a Chicagoan never included submitting my value system to the government for approval,” saith George

For many employers, the Obama adminstration's contraception mandate takes effect today – leading some religious groups to warn that Aug. 1 will “live in infamy.” David Gibson examines the reasons behind the heated rhetoric

Democrats drafting their party's platform have unanimously included an endorsement of same-sex marriage, WSJ reports.

Pat Robertson says the inclusion “will be the death knell for their party.”

Then again, perhaps Robertson is a better broadcaster than prophet.

A group of black pastors are opposing President Obama's relection because of his support for same-sex marriage.

Mitt Romney unveiled the leaders of his Catholic outreach team.

The GOP is also targeting a $6.5 million ad campaign at Jewish voters.

Rep. Michele Bachmann raked in $1 million in donations after accusing senior government officials and agencies of having ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Longtime Southern Baptist leader Richard Land will retire in 2013.

A Mississippi town rallied behind a black couple that had been blocked from marrying at a predominantly white church.

A Russian punk band faces serious prison time for playing a crude anti-Putin song at the altar of a Moscow cathedral. Must. Not. Make. Christian. Music. Joke.

Snoop Dogg has joined the Rastafarians and changed his name to Snoop Lion. I think he's already mastered one of the sacraments.

Finally, here's your Olympic roundup:

Gymnist Aly Raisman brought home the gold for the women's team while flipping and bouncing to “Hava Negila.”

Controversy simmers over a Saudi Arabian judo fighter's hijab.

The Chinese were accused of cheating at badminton

And a blogger lists all the Catholic atheletes competing in London

Whew, long roundup today. I need a nap.
