Red States, Porn States

According to a blog post by Justin Berton of the San Francisco Chronicle, conservative red states are home to more subscribers to pornography than more liberal blue states. To look at it in perspective, 8 of 10 porn-consuming states voted Republican in the most recent election.

There are a few interesting little nuggets of information found in the study:

1. Twenty-seven states that passed defense of marriage amendments to keep gay marriage unconstitutional had a “marginally higher rate” of subscribers.

2. There might be a “Sunday effect that is driven by religion” and attending church as there were fewer porn purchases on Sundays.

3. Utah, which has a large Mormon population, tops all others in porn consumption.

The study was conducted by the American Economic Association’s Journal of Economic Perspectives. Data was gathered by examining a list of credit card subscribers from a top 10 seller of online porn.
