CLGS presents: 14th annual Georgia Harkness Lecture featuring Rev. Dr. Rebecca Voelkel
Free virtual event to focus on queer theologies as tools of political resistance
BERKELEY, Calif. — The Center for LGBTQ & Gender Studies in Religion (CLGS) at Pacific School of Religion (PSR) is honored to announce the 14th Annual Georgia Harkness Lecture. This year’s speaker, Rev. Dr. Rebecca Voelkel, a renowned theologian and justice advocate, will present Sacred Reckonings with the Doctrine of Discovery’s Betrayal, exploring the intersections of queerness, resistance, and justice. The lecture will be held virtually on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 4 PM (Pacific).
Rev. Dr. Voelkel brings decades of experience in theological activism, having worked extensively in movements addressing racial, LGBTQ, and environmental justice. Her lecture will focus on how queer theologies can inspire and sustain responses to the deep-seated legacies of the Doctrine of Discovery, a framework that historically justified the exploitation and colonization of Indigenous peoples. By connecting this history to contemporary movements, Voelkel will highlight how queer approaches to faith and resistance offer essential tools in dismantling systems of White and Christian supremacy. Her work exemplifies the CLGS mission of transforming faith communities through inclusive and justice-driven approaches to religion, gender, and sexuality.
The Georgia Harkness Lecture honors the pioneering legacy of Dr. Georgia Harkness, a trailblazing Methodist theologian and the first woman to teach theology in a Protestant seminary in the United States. Her advocacy for gender equality and her commitment to social justice continue to inspire those engaged in theological scholarship and activism today.
This free event is open to the public, and advance registration is required. All are invited to join us for what promises to be a powerful discussion on faith, justice, and the pursuit of liberation for marginalized communities.
