Pope Paul VI lead the Catholic Church for 15 years. Among his memorable actions are writing the Humanae Vitae in 1968, which condemned artificial contraception in the Church, and reforming maximum ages for cardinals’ participation in the papal conclave. He was also the last Pope to be crowned rather than inaugurated and he sold his tiara for charity. He died of a heart attack in Italy on August 9, 1978.
Announced earlier this year, Venerable Paul VI is to be beatified on October 14, at which point he will be known as Blessed Paul VI. With one posthumous miracle required for beatification, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved an instance apparently centering on the inexplicable recovery of a fetus’ organs after the pregnant mother prayed to Paul in the 1990s. If another posthumous miracle is approved, Paul could be canonized as a saint.
This video shows Pope Paul VI’s trip to Sydney in 1970 — the first papal visit to Australia. It was filmed by 2SM, a popular music radio station owned by the Roman Catholic Church. Roman Catholics made up about a quarter of the population of Australia at the time.
