(RNS) After accusing Jews of being blacks’ “worst enemy,” Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan has appealed for “dialogue” and help in repairing “the damage that has been done by your ancestors to mine.”

Farrakhan, who has a long history of anti-Semitic remarks and black nationalism, wrote the leaders of 15 Jewish organizations that God will “bring you and your people to disgrace and ruin” if they continue to “fight and oppose me.”

The June 24 letter accompanied copies of “The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews”, a two-volume set of books published by the Nation of Islam’s Historical Research Department. Recipients included the American Jewish Committee, Rabbinical Council of America and the Anti-Defamation League.

“Armed with this knowledge from the pens of Jewish scholars, Rabbis, and historians, we could now charge you with the most vehement anti-Black behavior in the annals of our history in America and the world,” Farrakhan said.

Abraham Foxman, director of the ADL, on Tuesday (June 29) said Farrakhan’s accusations were simply the latest in his 20 years of vocal anti-Semitism.

“His anti-Semitism is obsessive, diabolical and unrestrained,” Foxman said. “He has opened a new chapter in his ministry where scapegoating Jews is not just part of a message, but the message,”

Farrakhan rejected charges of anti-Semitism in his letter, saying he has never condoned anti-Jewish acts or policies.

“… I ask you to find one act committed by me or those who follow me that has injured one Jewish person, stopped Jews from doing business, hindered their education, injured their families, sullied or desecrated their synagogues,” he wrote. “You will not find one.”
