PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. (RNS) Sometimes you just don’t have time for an entire service on Ash Wednesday, or you can’t get away from work.

Don’t worry, a growing number of congregations are offering drive-thru services so you can still get your ashes, including Colonial Church in Prairie Village, Kan.

Ministerial intern Shea Zellweger, who stood in the frigid temperatures waving at passing cars, said about 30 to 40 cars had stopped for drive-thru services this Wednesday (Feb. 10).


Zellweger, along with the senior minister of the United Church of Christ congregation, take shifts from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., offering ashes, a prayer and a small gift.

This is the fourth year Colonial Church has offered the drive-thru service.
