Interfaith statement of support for new UN disarmament initiative

On May 24 the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres announced the launching of a new UN disarmament initiative, calling attention to the growing dangers of the nuclear arms race, and urging the nuclear powers to resume arms reduction negotiations without further delay. Arms control talks have been at a standstill for several years, while developments in technology have been increasing the danger of nuclear catastrophe. Nuclear delivery systems that are faster and harder to detect are shortening warning and decision times, multiplying risks of war by accident or miscalculation.

On the day of the Secretary General’s speech, a wide spectrum of religious bodies issued a statement of conscience strongly supporting the UN initiative. New signers are welcome.
