PORTLAND, Ore. — A composer, writer and professor, Ricky Manalo, CSP now prepares to receive the Pastoral Musician of the Year award for 2018. The award is “given to a pastoral musician who exemplifies the best of the National Pastoral Association of Musicians (NPM), one who has given substantial witness or promotion to the role of pastoral music in parish, diocesan, or institutional life,” their website states.

“I feel grateful and humbled,” says Manalo. “I had served as a board member from 2008-12 and also founded the Asian and Pacific Musicians Sub-Committee. So, NPM has always been a part of my music ministry formation. It feels humbling to be recognized by my peers and colleagues!”

Manalo, who has completed his doctorate in Liturgy and the Sociology of Religion, currently serves as an official consultor to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He frequently travels, speaking and leading workshops, and is recognized as an authority on intercultural liturgical issues and music.

He has also released a new collection, Be Still and Know I’m Here, along with hisMass of Christ the Inner Light. It is a meditative and reflective collection, calling individuals toward introspection.

“We could not continue our mission without our composers,” says Wade Wisler, OCP Publisher. “The Holy Spirit inspires them to write music for the needs of today’s Church. Father Manalo’s new collection and Mass setting are a great example of this. He is quite deserving of the 2018 Pastoral Musician of the Year Award.”
