Faithful America, the largest online community of Christians putting faith into action for social justice, is pleased to announce the Rev. Nathan Empsall as its new Campaigns Director.

Faithful America taps into the grassroots power of Christians across the country, helping its members raise their voices to reclaim the Gospel’s message of love and justice through rapid-response campaigns. Members come from many denominations; are both lay and ordained; and live in every state, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

During Rev. Nathan’s first weeks as Campaigns Director, Faithful America members have already submitted more than 64,000 signatures protesting the Trump administration’s racist immigration and refugee policies.

More than 13,000 members are calling on HarperCollins Christian Publishing to cut ties between Bible Gateway and its “ministry partner” James Dobson after Dobson said “illiterate” asylum seekers threaten U.S. culture.

An additional 36,000 members also took action for LGBT rights during Pride Month.

Rev. Nathan is a veteran digital organizer, Episcopal priest, and recent graduate of both Yale Divinity School and the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He has previously served as an online campaigner for the Sierra Club, President Obama’s Organizing for America, and petition website Care2.

He is the founder of the independent Episcopal Climate News and a volunteer member of the Episcopal Church’s Task Force on Care of Creation and Environmental Racism.

Faithful America’s board president, Heidi Thompson, said members are eager to put faith into action under Rev. Nathan’s leadership: “The soul of our country is at stake. As followers of Jesus, we will not sit back while families escaping violence are separated at the border, or while the religious right misuses faith to justify hatred. With Rev. Nathan’s guidance, Faithful America’s members will continue to organize and speak up for our Gospel values of love and justice.”

Rev. Nathan says he is excited to help Faithful America’s members act for social justice in the digital age: “Together, we will love our neighbors by organizing against the forces that oppress our neighbors. Matthew 18 says where two or three are gathered in Christ’s name, Jesus will be there, and the Internet gives us an amazing ability to gather in Christ’s name.”

Rev. Nathan takes over from executive director Michael Sherrard. Faithful America is grateful to Michael for a smooth transition and for his nearly eight years of hard work and success, and wishes him the best.
