(RNS) — When Donny Osmond performs a wedding ceremony, not just any robe will do.

The singer, who played the title role in the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on stage and screen in the 1990s, posted on Facebook Monday (Oct. 12) photos of himself presiding over the wedding of his friends Todd and Rachel Salmon.

Just before pronouncing the couple husband and wife, Osmond said he announced, “Pastors would normally wear a robe. This pastor will now wear a coat.”

Osmond then pulled out the dreamcoat he wore as Joseph — red and yellow and green and brown and blue — and donned it as he made the pronouncement.

He said that he had received a special license by the state of Utah to officiate the Salmons’ wedding.

Todd Salmon is a fan of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” — the popular musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber based on the biblical story of Joseph — and had seen Osmond perform in it several times, the singer said in his post.

Osmond, 62, who more recently has appeared on the TV show “The Masked Singer” and in a long-running show in Las Vegas with his sister Marie Osmond, joked he “took on the title of Pastor Osmond” for the occasion.

But he takes his faith seriously as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While he doesn’t often speak publicly about his beliefs, his website includes a page explaining them, which he has said is the most-visited section of the site.

In response to one question on his page, Osmond said he relates in many ways to his most famous role.

“It really was a blessing to be a part of that musical at that particular time in my life, especially with the many career challenges I had back then,” he said.

“I do know that Joseph’s faith and mine is what sustained us both.”

To any other fans hoping “Joseph” might perform their wedding ceremony: Osmond said his license only was good for that one wedding.
