Pride in the Pews and the University of Pennsylvania’s LGBT Center, Makuu: Black Cultural Center, Chaplain’s Office, and the Christian Association will host a series of in-person, on-campus events from Friday, October 28th, 2022 – Saturday, October 29th, 2022 in Philadelphia, PA to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month. The two-day event, The Fierce Urgency of Now: Queering Black Christianity in Unprecedented Times, will bring together local faith leaders, activists, and academics to celebrate the historic and present-day role Black LGBTQ+ Christians play in advancing social movements.

We will co-host three public events: a faith-based, community-based panel discussion on LGBTQ+ equality, an interactive storytelling event showcasing LGBTQ+ Christian voices, and a brunch highlighting the importance of faith-based activism on issues such as voting rights, women’s rights, and marriage equality.

“The Fierce Urgency of Now event is timely, and addresses an important issue that is sometimes overlooked in LGBTQ+ communities,” according to Penn LGBT Center Director Erin Cross. “Partnering with Pride in the Pews helps us uplift the important contributions and voices of Black LGBTQ+ Christians now and from in the past, and fits squarely into the Center’s mission rooted in social justice.”

We are delighted to honor the legacy of Black LGBTQ+ Christians by inviting our broader community to reflect on their individual role in creating a more just and inclusive society. As attacks against women’s rights, voting rights, and LGBTQ+ rights abound, we fundamentally believe now is the time to elevate faithful voices advocating for marginalized communities.

“Pride in the Pews is elated to partner with several centers across the University of Pennsylvania to honor Black LGBTQ+ faithful and allies during LGBTQ+ History Month. Black LGBTQ+ faith-based leaders—Bayard Rustin, Pauli Murry, Ruby Sales, and more—are indispensable parts of our collective story. We are grateful for the opportunity to amplify their stories and to learn from them as we usher in a kinder, more big-hearted world.” — Don Abram, Executive Director and Founder of Pride in the Pews

The event is open to the public and current University of Pennsylvania
