Journalist Tim Alberta on American Evangelicals and Extremism

Religious extremism is hardly a new phenomenon in America – but now more than ever, buoyed by an emerging Christian nationalist movement, it threatens nearly every corner of American public life. This week’s Alabama Supreme Court decision that frozen embryos constitute human beings – a ruling steeped in religious doctrine – is another painful reminder of that reality. In order to confront the threats to faith and democracy today, it’s our responsibility to understand the deep historical roots of these trends and how they have manifested over decades.
