Religion Communicators Council to accept submissions until February 6
NEW YORK — The Religion Communicators Council (RCC) is accepting entries for the 2019 Wilbur Awards. Secular communicators have until February 6, 2019 to submit work produced during 2018 for consideration in one of the oldest recognition programs in religion communication.
The Council has presented Wilbur Awards annually since 1949, 70 years! They honor excellence by individuals in secular media – print and online journalism, books, blogs, radio, podcasts and television, movies and photography – in communicating religious issues, positive values, and themes.
Winners in 2018 represented CBS News, BuzzFeed, Deseret News, Bright Magazine, and several creative independent contributors, motion picture producers, bloggers, and journalists. Welcoming the Stranger, by Interfaith Voices, explored multiple religious perspectives on the spiritual imperative to welcome the stranger in the midst of what might be the largest refugee crisis since World War II; “Who Would Jesus Deport?,” an article from the Texas Observer examined the Bible’s take on immigration; a Washington Post Magazine piece profiled Paula White, the controversial and influential televangelist linked to the presidential family; and a Rowan and Littlefield book, Being Hindu: Understanding a Peaceful Path in a Violent World were among the entries that received an award during the ceremony in Atlanta last year. The 2019 awards will be presented Friday, April 12 in Chicago, Illinois during the council’s 90th annual national convention. Winners receive an individually handcrafted stained-glass Wilbur trophy and national recognition for their work.
Secular communicators may enter work in eight categories. Juries of media professionals coordinated by Religion Communicators Council members across the country evaluate submissions on content, creativity, impact and excellence in communicating religious values.
