Episcopal Diocese of Long Island celebrates 150th anniversary with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry

The Episcopal Diocese of Long Island will convene on November 16 and 17 to celebrate its 150th anniversary and hold its annual convention, bringing together clergy and other delegates representing congregations in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn.

The Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry will be a special guest at the convention. The bishop of Long Island, the Right Rev. Larry C. Provenzano said, “Bishop Curry will preach at the convention’s anniversary Eucharist, participate in a convocation of priests and deacons and attend a gathering of youth officially attending the convention.”

Bishop Curry, the preacher in May at the “Royal Wedding,” will encourage the youth to discuss and become part of a new movement he has initiated in the Episcopal Church named the “Way of Love,” which explores “a way of life focused on a Jesus-centered life that values everyone near and far.” As a project, the youth will gather travel-sized toiletries for distribution by the Interfaith Nutrition Network.

The diocese includes 129 parishes, the Mercer School of Theology, Camp DeWolfe, Episcopal Ministries of Long Island, and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.

Nearly 500 Episcopalians will attend the convention and 1,200 are expected for the 150th Anniversary Eucharist.

The convention and anniversary Eucharist will be held at the Long Island Marriott located at 101 James Doolittle Blvd, Uniondale, NY.

SPECIAL #MeToo” DIOCESAN INITIATIVE
The Episcopal Church, as a denomination, has responded to the recent national #MeToo initiatives with churchwide efforts to examine any historical or current sexual exploitation issues in the church. At the diocesan convention, Bishop Provenzano will announce a special initiative to address these concerns within the Diocese of Long Island.

SCHEDULE
Convention – Friday, November 16 – 9 am to 4 pm
150th Anniversary Eucharist – Saturday, November 17 – 10:30 am to 1:30 pm
