Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Al Mohler is in the running for president of the Southern Baptist Convention, reports the Southern Baptist Texan, the newspaper of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention. Robert Jeffress, pastor of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas said he intends to nominate the 48-year-old Mohler. Jeffress said Mohler is “the kind of visionary leader Southern Baptists need to communicate a missional conservatism and biblical clarity to the world.”

Jeffress noted that Mohler has appeared on CNN’s “Larry King Live” and been called the “reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S” by Time magazine.

Mohler, for his part, told the paper he appreciated Jeffress’ support. The seminary president said that Southern Baptists are challenged “to recover our passion for the gospel in evangelism and missions and to renew our determination to defend the gospel in an age of postmodern confusion.”

The news service of Mohler’s Louisville, Ky., seminary posted the newspaper story on its Web site.

Frank Page, the current SBC president, is serving his second one-year term and is not eligible for re-election in June.
