Some churches just can’t catch a break. Consider Memorial Baptist Church in New Orleans, for example.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina blew off the roof of the sanctuary.

The congregation spent the next three years rebuilding it and held their first service in the remodeled sanctuary in July.

In September, Hurricane Gustav blustered through the Big Easy, again tearing the roof off the sucker and damaging the piano, pews and carpet.

The congregation put a temporary plastic roof over the church to salvage what was left.

Hurricane Ike arrived a week later, ripped off that roof.

“And that finished off the rest of the building,” said pastor Jackie Gestes.

Still, Gestes says won’t give up the funk-his church plans to rebuild.

“We want to continue to be a beacon of light for this community,” Gestes said.
