Cardinals’ hats survive cathedral fire

Strictly speaking, the five red broad-brimmed, tasseled, Italian-made silk hats strung from the ceiling of Holy Name Cathedral represent the five cardinals who have died serving the Archdiocese of Chicago. But for some parishioners-relieved that the hats, called galeros, were apparently undamaged in Wednesday’s fire-they are symbolic of certain spiritual truths.
