Applying the Old Testament principle of stoning misbehaving children will probably get you thrown in jail, so perhaps it’s not surprising that parents are relying less on religion and more on themselves in raising their children.

LifeWay Research has released a study concluding that parents don’t describe their homes as “peaceful, relaxed, or joyful anymore.”

The national survey, which consisted of 1,200 parents with children under 18, found the following:

1. 61 percent of parents ignore parental seminars and 53 percent ignore religious parenting experts.

2. 21 percent rely on instruction from a sacred text while 15 percent depend on their church.

3. 14 percent say they are familiar with Biblical principles on parenting. When breaking down the percentage of parents’ familiarity with the Bible by denomination, here’s how it went: Protestants (27 percent), Catholics (7 percent), and evangelicals (52 percent).

4. 53 percent pray with their children and 31 percent hold family devotions at least once a month.

5. 38 percent of parents who attend weekly religious services say they aren’t encouraged by sacred texts.

6. 24 percent say they aren’t encouraged from teaching in a house of worship.

7. 43 percent of Protestant parents, and 85percent of Catholic parents, aren’t encouraged by a sacred text.

8. 39 percent of Protestant parents, and 71 percent of Catholic parents, say that their church is not a reliable for encouragement.
