Background
Renowned author, speaker, activist, and public theologian, Brian McLaren is, simply put, one of the most incisive voices within contemporary American Christianity. A former college English teacher and pastor, McLaren identifies himself as “an ecumenical global networker among innovative Christian leaders.” He is sought after for his perspective as a successful church planter and leading thinker within Emergence Christianity – a surging ecumenical movement that seeks to incorporate spiritual teachings, core values, and organizational principles from the early Christian communities into the 21st century context. In 2005, Time Magazine included him among its list of “The 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America.”
McLaren is also a prolific writer. He has published works of fiction and non-fiction, traditional books as well as e-books, and is a frequent blogger. His forthcoming book, We Make the Road By Walking: A Year-Long Quest for Spiritual Formation, Orientation and Activation will be published in June by Jericho Books.
In 2011, Brian McLaren joined the Board of Trustees for Claremont School of Theology. Since joining the board, Brian has been a regular presence on the CST campus. His previous talks at CST have generated large and enthusiastic audiences. He is currently collaborating with CST Professor Philip Clayton on the CANA Initiative, “a collective of faith-based organizations, individuals, institutions, and networks who seek to embody a new Christian ethos.”
