CHICAGO, IL—Loyola Press, the Catholic publishing house that published the first collection of Pope Francis’s writings since he became Pope, offers a unique perspective on the first Jesuit pope and his historic visit to the United States this September. A Jesuit ministry, Loyola Press has published two books by Pope Francis, and two books about him, which together offer a full portrait of the Pope and his vision for the Church.

Founded in 1912, Loyola Press is a nonprofit apostolate of the Chicago-Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus. The Press embraces the Jesuit passion for helping people to find God in all things, continuing the Jesuit tradition of service through the printed word. Their Pope Francis resources include:

• The Church of Mercy by Pope Francis: The first collection of writings from his first year as Pope expresses a desire for “a church that is poor, and for the poor.” It introduces themes that run through Pope Francis’s papacy: fostering solidarity with the poor; resisting the dehumanizing force of a culture where “money commands all”; and creating a welcoming Church that “steps outside herself,” to meet people where they are.

• Walking with Jesus by Pope Francis: The second collection of the Pope’s writings emphasizes the communitarian nature of the Church as a channel of God’s grace and infinite love that is open to all. He urges Catholics to bring hope to the hopeless, to beware the dangers of consumerism, and to protect creation.

• Pope Francis: Life and Revolution by Elisabetta Piqué: Argentine journalist Piqué, the Vatican correspondent for La Nación, had unprecedented access to family, friends, parishioners, politicians, Jesuit priests, and Catholic hierarchy as she reconstructed the life of Jorge Bergoglio. She shows how the Jorge Bergoglio we see today is the same person he has always been: a man who values faith over ideology; who is convinced that power means serving others; and who always tries to help people who are suffering in a practical way. Guided by the principles of Ignatian spirituality, he defies categories and labels, remaining “faithful to the Church and always open to dialogue.”

• Pope Francis: Why He Leads the Way He Leads by Chris Lowney: Formerly a J.P. Morgan & Co. managing director and onetime Jesuit seminarian, Lowney explores what is distinctive about the first Jesuit pope: vision, decision-making, and priorities shaped by intensive Jesuit life and leadership training. The Pope is working from a handbook from the 16th century that has proven “exquisitely relevant to 21st century challenges.”
