Christian militias kill up to 30 Muslim civilians in Central African Republic

BANGUI, Central African Republic (Reuters) Hundreds of civilians are seeking refuge inside a mosque in the Central African Republic’s border town of Bangassou amid ongoing attacks by Christian militias that have killed up to 30 civilians, U.N. officials and aid workers said on Sunday (May 14).

The attacks throughout the weekend on the town of Bangassou on the Congolese border have involved hundreds of fighters with heavy weaponry and appeared to be aimed at Muslims, they said, in the latest sign that the multiyear conflict is worsening.

The U.N. base there has also been targeted, prompting the deployment of extra troops to the remote town on Sunday in anticipation of further attacks. The U.N. troops had succeeded in partly securing the town by dusk, said Herve Verhoosel, spokesman for the U.N. mission (MINUSCA).

“The situation is extremely deplorable and we are doing everything to rapidly retake control of Bangassou,” MINUSCA chief Parfait Onanga-Anyanga told Reuters in an interview.

Asked about the civilian death toll, he added: “It is clear that we are looking at numbers that could easily reach 20 to 30.” Many of the fighters are child soldiers who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, he added.

Local Red Cross President Pastor Antoine Mbao Bogo said gunfire continued to ring out from the town on Sunday, blocking attempts by his organization and others to reach the wounded and recover the dead.

In recent months, roaming militias spurred by ethnic and religious rivalries have stepped up violence despite pledges to take part in a government-led disarmament program.

Aid workers say that militias seem to be exploiting security voids after Ugandan and French soldiers left in the past few months when their missions ended.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday he was outraged by the attacks on the 13,000-strong mission that have killed six peacekeepers around Bangassou, an area previously sheltered from conflict.

Prime Minister Simplice Sarandji condemned the attacks in a statement on local radio on Sunday and said those responsible would be brought to justice.

Central African Republic has been plagued by interreligious violence since 2013, when mainly Muslim Seleka fighters seized power and ousted then-President Francois Bozize, prompting reprisal killings from anti-balaka militias drawn from the Christian minority.

More than 400,000 people in the former French colony are displaced internally and 2.2 million, or nearly half the population, are reliant on aid.

  • Where are the usual whiners about how persecuted unto death Christians are? Will there be public mourning for these Muslim victims of good Christians?

Where is Frankie Graham when you need him? Probably counting his very large salary.

  • After 8 hours, yours is still the only post, Ben. Not even one word from even one Christian, or from any other religious person, for that matter. It’s as chilly here as a cold, dark, silent tomb.

  • I’ll play the Evangelical advocate:

It’s more sectarian than religious ideology, fueled by the coup. The militia doesn’t represent Christianity – they just happen to be Christians. Muslim militias or terrorists, on the other hand, are fueled solely by their religion.

This is rare. Far more Christians have been killed by Muslims than by Christians slaughtering Muslims.

    The Muslims started it.

  • Maybe since the facts are coming from you, these guys will at least **think** on those facts for a minute. (But if not, that’s on them. The End.)

Meanwhile, the article speaks for itself. It’s a tragedy. But there are many areas of tragedy all over the world. The officially atheist government of China still has a ton of human blood and human rights violations on its hands. Perhaps our resident atheists will address it someday.

  • The growth of Christianity and Islam is primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa…whose population will explode in the coming decades putting pressure on African land and resources. Believers in these religions will eventually have to decide to co-exist or fight. History suggests it will be conflict.

Its a recipe for God-driven African wars, genocide and destruction. We already see it as described in the above article, also in Nigeria, and the Horn of Africa…more to come.

Also its a proxy war for Africa between Saudi Wahhabi money vs. US evangelicals. Wonder which side God will choose?

  • That was my guess as to what arguments Christians might present not my viewpoints. The only statement I agree with is that religion isn’t necessarily to blame for what is done in it’s name. This applies to Christians and Muslims. Just like atheists aren’t to blame for the actions of Stalin, Mao or Pol Pot.

  • Still waiting for the usual suspects to condemn murders by Christians.

“It’s a tragedy” followed by a resounding “oh, well!” “And what about them atheists, eh?” doesn’t count.

  • Hmmmmmmm.

Story posted 20 hours ago. Only the atheist condemning it, apart from a half hearted “atheist squirrel!!!!” Coming from one of the usual suspects.

Moral bankruptcy. So much cheaper than the usual kind.

  • The reprisals weren’t directed at the militia but innocent civilians. That is so un-christian. So bigly shameful.

  • Hmmmmmmm.

17 hours after my last comment. And still, no Christian coming forward to condemn the attacks.

    Charming.

  • I wonder if atheists ever kill any innocent civilians.
I will try googling “Colombine” and see what I can find.

  • You note below it gets deflected to mainly Muslim in terms of fault attribution.

It is appalling but the who country is a mess and has been since the 1990’s. Current civil war preceded by the CAR Bush War..

I think we do do a disservice to identify by religious identity here though given the large number of ethnic groups, and the underlying causes of conflict. Religion is secondary but clearly not preventative.

  • Of course that’s true to an extent. I don’t really care about causes, just the deflections.

  • Got it. Amnesty International published a report in July 2016 as to religious persecution against the Muslim population including restrictions on movement, bans on prayer and other practices, the destruction of mosques (in the hundreds), and forced conversion to Christianity. https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/afr19/2165/2015/en/# At the same time Open Doors USA (“saving persecuted Christians worldwide”) claims it is all Muslim persecution of Christians.

  • Actually these guys should be condemned for their actions. They are not Christian at all for taking lives of muslims or any other person. They are not justified either for using certain verses of the bible old or new. Cause christ did not condone the taking of life.

Yes i know what it says in the old testament where god sends isreal to wipe out the the Canaanites. However he gave them time to repent to turn from their sin. They did not so god used isreal to wipe them out. But isreal was not off the hook for taking the life they also had to atone for what they had done.

By the way muslims are taught to kill hews Christians and atheists alike. They get that from their own holy book. Where as now in the new testement there is no command to take no others life. We are commanded to tell people repent and be forgiven in Christ Jesus name for the forgiveness of your sins.

  • God chooses neither cause what he really wants is for them to both repent and trust in his son christ Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and thiers and mine. And to teach those who believe how to preach law and gospel.

So, what is happening has nothing to do with God.

  • They are tired if their families and innocent being slaughtered. Perhaps they want the jihadist to know how it feels to have their families murdered.

  • An eye for an eye, and pretty soon the whole world is blind.

Who said “love thine enemy” and “turn the other cheek”? Or is that something else that Christians don’t need to pay attention to?

  • I had no idea Christians ever look to atheists as their role models.
Glad to know “We” justify “Your” slaughter of innocent civilian/s.

  • Actually Jim, the Christians started the bad blood between the two religions during The Crusades. But I wouldn’t call anyone in Boko Haram or Isil Muslim anymore than I would call these guys Christians. They are terrorists and thugs who use religion as an excuse to commit unspeakable acts.

  • Katt, you need to study your history again, the Crusades where launched by Christians to recover lands that were originally Christian or Jewish but were conquered by Muslim armies.

  • Two wrongs don’t make a right in any language or religion. Murder is just that and nothing else.

  • Actually you need to brush up on your history. The Crusades were a purely religious act undertaken to purge the land of non believers. It was not about a land grab. That’s called a war.

  • Oh my goodness, did you say that “far more Christians have been killed by Muslims than by Christians slaughtering Muslims”?

Throughout history, no religious group has been responsible subtle for more brutal deaths than Christians. During the seven official ‘Crusades’, some estimates have deaths at the hands of Christians topping the 100 million mark. Muslims were numbered in the tens of millions in that group.

That does not include the hundreds of thousands murdered in the Bosnia/Hertzogvenia by Christian zealots.

No religion for the rest of history will ever be responsible for more deaths than Christians have been throughout history.

  • And, BULLSHIT again! Made up statistics, no matter how breathlessly delivered do not an argument make, and those numbers have been roundly debunked by people much smarter than you!

  • UN troops? Disarmament? Sounds like everything is going according to the jew/zionist plan after having divided peoples so as to fight and kill one another, Sad.

  • Christians militia in central africa are just giving the filthy muslims a taste of theyr own medicine. You know why this militia are called ANTI balaka? Balaka means Machete. So who is using the machete there? Ah right! The filthy muslims. Soon you will be purged from this planet stinky muslims 🙂

  • I just adore religious bigots whose faith tells them to hate rather than to love. It very much undermines the belief that faith has anything to do with a god of love.

  • I DISAGREE WITH ALL OF THE ABOVE. NOT ON SINGLE POINT IS VALID WHEN I CONSIDER THAT I AM AN INDIVIDUAL. AS AN INDIVIDUAL I CAN NOT ALLOW GROUPS TO DICTATE WHAT I THINK. GODS AND GOVERNMENTS ARE AS REAL AS TITLES.AND BORDERS. I TRY NOT ONLY TO EVOLVE OUTWARDLY ALSO INWARDLY.

  • YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE GROUPS, STATES, RELIGIONS, TITLES, LAWS, YOU WANT BUT YOU CAN NEVER ESCAPE THE FACT THAT WE ARE ALL THE SAME, WE EAT, SLEEP, DRINK AND SHIT JUST THE SAME.

  • “Where is Frankie Graham when you need him?”…. that’s just it, he isn’t needed, as it is his (christian) beliefs which perpetuate these killings. You’re right about playing the hypocritical persecution card. The right-wing fundamentalists in the US have only themselves to blame for the waring against Islam/Muslims.

  • i condemn this atack, and i mourn these murdered men and i am christian, i hope those assasins repent their sins, Jesuschrist said: love to others, you shall not kill

  • Stop calling those thugs christians. I am a real BAPTIZED christian. ( acts 2:38). I wad shocked and appalled by these thugs. They are NOT christians and will burn in HELL for this!!!!!!!

  • Hi i judt stumbled pn this and commented. There are alot of people who say they are christians and they are not. A real christian does what the they did in book of acts 2:38. Hear, believe, repent, confess jesus lord, and be baptized for remission of sins. Thats THE CHURCH. No other denomination is right. They look over things in Bible and you csnnot fo that. We must repent AND be baptize , full submerion in water…no sprinkle. THE CHURCH has no earthly name. It is named after CHRIST. Therefor it is the Church of CHRIST. There is no earthly headquarters, no pope, jesus is the head. No more prophets we have Bible. Just reaf the book of ACTS to find the church CHRIST died for. Sorry denominations but you are not doing what GOD wants.

  • Um, wrong. The Christians got involved only after Muslims had mauraudered peoples all over that area of the world and did so violently. Rome was asked to help as the invading Muslims were getting close to, I believe it was Jerusalem, and only got involved to protect precious artifacts. Sorry, your history is wrong. Christians were forced to defend themselves against uncivilized and barbaric sociopaths hell bent on controlling the world by force cuz no one wanted anything to do with your evil Islam. Y’all do the same today as well. Convert or die. Yeah, I’m on to your kind. I don’t fall for all that sugar coating y’all spew to trick the masses into accepting your ideology. Your blasphemy laws are hotly pursued for one reason only…shut up people like me so the uneducated more civilized people’s wobt know what hit them till it’s to late. I’m informed and educated on Islam thanks to Muslims who attacked my country on 9/11 which was how long ago I’ve been studying? Allah is hateful. My God is loving and abhors murder. My God reaches to love thy neighbor. Allah? Hate with all your heart the Jewish peoples. You teach that crap from birth till death and do so fanatically. Pathetic. I choose love. Y’all don’t have a clue what love us. All one has to do is open their eyes to see that. Men who follow Islam are freaking jerks and deserve hell for their anger issues and anuses of women. Damned if some Muslim man is gonna tell me what I can and can’t do. I will fight to the death to protect my America from the lines of you. Sorry. 9/11 left a bad taste in my mouth. And no, there are a few really good peaceful Muslims but they are actually rare. The majority are only laying low until the time is right, they hope. Thing is, my Jesus is coming soon and it is then you people will say mourn your falsehoods. No, I don’t pretend to be gentle about this. You people threatened my home and continue to do so to this day. Jihad ain’t no damned personal spiritual journal. Even the Muslim Brotherhood refers to a cultural jihad in their manifesto. One thing’s for certain, I’m one gal that will gladly die before ever converting and submitting to Islam. I truly despise it to the point I don’t care what I say about it. Hell, call me all the names you want cuz rolls right off my back. I really don’t care cuz I KNOW what I stand for and it’s far, far better than what Islam offers. I’m onto you…and others are catching on too

  • Christians, jews have always had the right to send themselves. God says so. God even says to build walls as a means of keeping a society cohesive and more safe from enemies looking to destroy them in order to gain whatever power they are looking for. Sorry. I don’t fall for all this Muslim’s are poor, poor victims bull crap. I’ve done my homework. Say what you will. Don’t mind at all cuz in the end the truth will be known by all when all people from all over this planet and in the grave will bow and know that Jesus is what Christians claim Hom to be and that Surorise! God really dies exist! Oh and yes, Reverend Graham will be justified as correct and he will reap many rewards whereas people like you may very well be condemned to eternal hell just as Christians warned about. So say, believe, try to force what you will cuz in the end it ain’t gonna matter to me. BUT I guarantee you’re gonna wish you didn’t fall for all the bs.

  • LOL…typical crap. Maaaannnn! I can’t wait until Judgement Day when true bwlievers will be justified and idiots like you will be begging to have one more chance to repent and claim Jesus is your Lord and Saviour. Sadly, to late and you will pay your unfortunate dues. I don’t wish hell on anyone but if you deserve it, well, what can I say?

  • It’s been 2000 years, and Christians are leaving christianity.

You seem to forget 1900 years of antisemitism, leading to the murder of 6 million Jews, by Christians. World War I, 20 million Christians killed by other Christians.

You can guarantee nothing of the sort. You’re not god, you don’t represent god, you don’t speak for god.

  • You are doing exactly that, just waiting to say “I told you so.”

The musl8ms say exactly the same thing.

  • Jesus said, turn the other cheek. He didn’t say “unless Kay waits disagrees.”

It is people like you who drive others away from your “one true faith” because you clearly only follow the parts you agree with.

  • In 2,000 years some Christians have always left Christianity.

If you want to do body counts, let’s check out the atheistic countries.

  • I believe the “WHATaboutwhataboutshataboutwhatabout” you’re referring to involves:

    – adding perspective

    – pointing out the log in your eye while you natter about the nit in someone else’s.

You may have noticed you only run into me at Religion News Service discussions, which concludes “following me, stalking me obsessively”.

However, were it a real problem folks would go to:

    https://disqus.com/by/disqus_EvywcWX4px/

    and find it marked private.

Btw, you have nothing intelligent to say about either Christianity or Christians beyond you dislike them.

  • Stalk stalk stalk stalk Stalk stalk stalk stalk Stalk stalk stalk stalk.

Obsess obsess obsess obsess obsess Obsess obsess obsess obsess obsess.

  • Were it a real problem folks would go to:

    https://disqus.com/by/disqus_EvywcWX4px/

    and find it marked private.

What they find instead is a “poor me” poser whose

Whine whine whine whine Whine whine whine whine Whine whine whine whine.

Poor me poor me poor me poor me poor me Poor me poor me poor me poor me poor me.

is no doubt part of a life-long pattern of playing the victim.

  • So, it really doesn’t matter whether the Muslims were murdered or died of old age for they are going to hell regardless, yes?
