A saint’s brain is stolen and Catholics pray for its return

ROME (RNS) Police set up roadblocks in northern Italy after a thief posing as a pilgrim stole tiny fragments of the brain of John Bosco, one of the country’s most revered saints.

The thief entered the church, named after the 19th century saint in Castelnuovo, near Turin, last Friday (June 2), and left with a glass case containing the relic of the saint, who is also known as Don Bosco.

Devotees often visit the church to pray before the relic kept behind the altar. On Sunday, pilgrims gathered at the Don Bosco Basilica to pray for its return.

“I invite whoever took it to give it back immediately, without any conditions so we can close this painful page and continue to honor the memory of Don Bosco worthily in his birthplace,” said Archbishop Cesare Nosiglia of Turin.

St. John Bosco is venerated for having dedicated his life to helping poor, deprived children. Born in Castelnuovo in 1815, he founded the Salesian religious order. He died in 1888 and was canonized in 1934.

Nosiglia said in a statement the news was something “you never wanted to hear.”

“It makes you think of the profound moral misery of someone who would steal a ‘sign’ that’s been left and conserved for the devotion and the faith of all,” he said.

Police worry the thief may seek a ransom for the return of the saint’s brain and there has also been speculation in the Italian media that it may be used for a satanic rite in which Christian symbols are defiled.

Body parts belonging to saints are often displayed and revered in Catholic churches in Europe. They have also been targeted by thieves. In 2014, a vial of blood from Pope John Paul II was stolen.

The Rev. Moreno Filipetto, a spokesman for the Salesian order in northern Italy, told Vatican Radio: “You can take away a relic of Don Bosco, but you can’t take away Don Bosco from the church or the world.”

Police are continuing their investigation and the public can no longer access the area inside the church where the relic was previously displayed.

  • This reminds me of those Hidden Pictures pages in the old Highlights magazine: How many stupid things can you find in this article?

  • First was the Abby Normal brain heist. Now the Abbey Newcastle brain is stolen. I would look for a pilgrim in a long cloak leaving with what appears to be a hump on his back.

  • Very interesting article. Especially, since the Drudge Report was running an article about a company in South America doing tests to “awaken the dead”. While, having spent many years dealing with cryogenics, I sincerely do believe that cryogenically frozen persons could be thawed out and life begun again. Now, with this “Saints’ parts of brains” being stolen, begs to question, is it possible to reanimate life is unique. However, we may one day bring the dead back to life, they are not likely to be the same person previously dead, as nature and life’s effects on the person generates experiences which must be felt and dealt with to bring the same individual back to life. However, it is just a matter of time, before, we can cryogenically thaw out body parts, etc., and extend life in all forms..

  • Yes! Imagine what Trump could further accomplish, in a long line of successes and comebacks!
Enlighten us as to your successes in business or in life, twit?

Now, look at your boy king Obamtard, a real brain in his head.
Now that’s the real deal! Mmmmm mmmm mmmm.
    Am I right??

  • John Bosco died in 1888 so I wonder why they had to extract his brains to use as relics. Hair or a finger would have worked just fine. In any case he seems to have been rather controversial. As the Patron Saint of Stage Magicians I assume his relic disappearing act will end soon enough.

  • It defies logic. But then again, mental diseases, including liberalism, disallows logic!

  • What does this article have to do with President Trump? He didn’t steal Don Bosco’s brain, nor does he need one. And you should be as stupid as he is. He is a billionaire and he is leader of the free world. LOL

  • And hedonists like you who DO have sex for fun have brought us herpes, AIDS, abortion, chlamydia. stupid.

  • Oh, Obama has a good brain. He’s just a wicked Islamic jihadist from Kenya who was only posing as American Christian president… because he’s a filthy, lying con artist and an enemy of the United States of America.

  • If he’d left the money his Daddy gave him in an index fund, he’d have as much money today without all the drama.

Failed businessman. Failing, missing brain pres.

  • First it was Abby someone, then only after intense interrogation, did it turn out to be Abby Normal’s brain.

  • Aren’t you precious! How is that relevant? Is he a charity? This nincompoop doesn’t even run the businesses himself as is clear from his performance as president. He can’t sit for a whole paragraph of information. Every job is beyond him.

  • Wow almost as old as the stable of potential 2020 Democrat presidential candidates.

  • So ya’ll missed the part about worshiping false idols huh? Pray to the one and only God and his Son.

  • Ah yes. One more ‘infallible’ interpretation of a Cliff Notes version of portions of scripture. Who’s next with their prophetic conclusions? 😀

  • “In second place is the tiny host that when swallowed becomes Christ’s flesh in your belly…”

When studying Catholic doctrine, reading comprehension can be your best friend. Try it again and get back to us. 😉

    Class dismissed.

  • There is something to be said for NOT keeping such things as relics ! No matter how much it seemed like a GOOD IDEA when they decided to do it REALLY, REALLY WAS NOT !

  • Responsible reporting on religion needs your support, RNS. You might contribute to that effort by a sober, informative and accurate report of this event.
“Tiny fragment” or “Saint’s brain.” ?
    You indict yourself.
    A useless operation.

  • Who would dig into someone’s skull to scoop out a little brain matter to put on display?
I assume he was already dead when it happened, but kinda creepy either way.

  • That was the VERY first thing I thought of-‘Whose brain?” Abby. “Abby who?” Abby Normal. I wonder how many people thought about that line reading the story.

  • I’ve been praying for the return of Hillary’s brain.

    To no avail.

    She’s a saint to Democrats.

  • The headline of this piece, intentionally or not, is insulting to Catholics. Though tiny relics were apparently stolen and the writer reports that some are praying for their return, it’s quite a stretch to write “A saint’s brain is stolen and Catholics pray for its return.” Obviously there is no correlation between tiny relics over a hundred years old and an actual “brain.” To suggest by such a title that Catholics are incapable of recognizing the differnce is diminishing to millions of people who practice the Faith and particularly thoughtless in a time where Christianity is increasingly diminished.

  • We prayed the same thing for our “president” between 2009 and 2016. I think God’s answer was “REAP IT!”

  • Mars could attack, the moon shot could be uncovered as a fake, and a photo of the second shooter on the grassy knoll could surface and the response from you would be something about Trump. That is just sad.

  • I have met some Salesians in my day, in West Havestraw and Goshen. None of them even came within one million miles of the sanctity of Don Bosco. Very, very sad. And revolting.

  • Nobody except you said anything about praying to the saint. You might want to take a remedial reading for comprehension course.

  • No joke…no one would do this without a reason. Watch it turns out the thief is the father of a terribly ill child and this is a desperate attempt to seek the direct intervention of a saint. If it turns out to be something like that…it is an act of faith not theft and will make punishment very difficult.

  • I was going to post that I was sure it was CNN’s brain eating Iranian, but your’s is better. It was nice, I can see them onscreen as I type, thanks.

  • A saint’s brain is stolen and Catholics pray for its return, as liberalism is a mental disorder.

  • I sure hope and pray this relic is returned. St. John Bosco was a great priest devoted to his flock.
His dream of Hell is quite alarming and powerful.

    JMJ pray for us.⛪️

  • Brains are way overrated, my opinion. Many brains, one Spirit. Theologian brains, astronaut brains, brain surgeon brains, pick up the trash brains, dishwasher brains, but one spirit to communicate to those brains if what I believe is true. Would a better prayer be,’Lord return your eyes, ears, nose, fingers, tongue to us, so we might use our brains to get, your sense, of ourselves and others?’

  • They need to send a search party to DNC headquarters. The Dems don’t have many brain cells in the current roster, so they’re adding some.

  • O.K. apart from the hilarious efforts to play upon “Young Frankenstein,” more thoughtful commentators will ruminate on the centuries old practice of veneration which borders on the reaches of idolatry.

  • Is this church by chance, located in an Emerald City at the end of a Yellow Brick Rd.?

  • God, the source of all good, can give power to His saints in heaven to heal, even as He gives it to saints on earth. See the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles—the apostles coming back to Jesus and telling Him how they had worked miracles in His name; after Pentecost St. Peter healing the sick, St. Paul returning life to a boy who died having fallen out of a window, and miracles worked by Padre Pio, and many more even to this day. A first-class relic, that is, an actual part of St. John Bosco’s (or any saint’s) body, as this small piece is, is sacred. Whoever took it should return it some way or another.

  • I cannot even imagine messing with the GOD who created the UNIVERSE. I know HE has given us freedom but to think that HE is going to sit back while stupid little dweeb demons disrespect one of HIS own is really more than I can accept. JOHN BOSCO set up schools for the orphans and was a champion for our abandoned children. He is one of my favorite SAINTS. I pray that His brain is returned and any dope who thinks that SATAN has any real power … especially over the GOD who created him is nuts.
I became a CATHOLIC because of the TRUTH. Searching for the TRUTH always led me back to the Original Christian FAITH… are we perfect … NO…. we’re human so no we’re a long way from perfect but
have I learned and an I keep learning the TRUTH about our UNIVERSE , our GOD … YOU BET.

Pray for an end to this rampant EVIL…. how stupid all the murderers and rioters and chanters etc. … what a waste of a life. GOD HEAR US. AMEN.

  • The collecting of relics makes me cringe. It’s a distasteful practice that should have been dispensed with several hundred years ago. All remains should be interred, and allowed to return to dust, as prophesied. Anything else is sinfully macabre, and bizarre in it’s content.

  • Maybe Catholics should be praying for another brain with real compassionate action for their Pope – a anti-US Fascisst who does nothing to save the thousands of Chtistians being killed in the Middle East except to say ” isn’t tahat terrible”

  • “And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon
a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when
he looketh upon it, shall live.” Exodus 21.8

  • Why won’t the church allow people in the area where the relic was? It’s because it wasn’t really stolen. It’s a conspiracy, a vast Catholic conspiracy.

  • I’ll say something about praying to a saint. What is a saint? One in heaven. Do you have a guardian angel? Have you ever asked him to pray for you? Congrats you just prayed to a saint.

  • So it was not a saint’s brain?

I think the incredible part of this article is that this kind of stuff still goes on in the Catholic church 500 years after Martin Luther nailed the 95 theses to the church door. I guess it shows how absolutely hidebound the Catholic church is in its non-Biblical ways. Luther, actually, deeply loved the Catholic church and wanted it to return to Biblical doctrines. He eventually realized this was never going to happen and the rest is history.

Technically the Catholic church is Christian since it has a belief in Christ as our Savior, but good grief it has a boatload of non-Biblical doctrines.

  • Since you have made your statement, you are Bearing False Witness against your neighbor.
    1. We VENERATE (look up the word for better understanding)
    2. We WORSHIP ONLY the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Sprite. No one else

Now it is your call. Do you still stand by your statement after knowing the TRUTH?

  • Now you see why Martin Luther had a problem with the Catholic church. Relics were just one of many un-Biblical things.

  • Now you see why Martin Luther had such a problem with the Catholic church. Un-Biblical doctrines and this practice of these relics from the silly to the disturbing existed when Martin Luther was alive.

  • I’m not a fan of the Catholic church, but a kid is actually more likely to be molested at a US public school than a Catholic one. The teacher’s unions work overtime to keep that little tidbit quiet, and are powerful enough to succeed for the most part.

  • Depends on the fund. May have been eaten up by commissions, yearly or maintenance fees, and taxes…

  • That Jesus was a historical figure is one of the few things I DO believe. When I was at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher last month, I’m pretty sure those bones didn’t belong to Jesus.

  • Are you people kidding me? Christianity is a deep faith, not a weird body parts worship. Get over it you weirdos!

  • Here is what baffles me.

Who is to say God didn’t want it stolen? And if he wanted it back, couldn’t God make it come back?

  • Is that because there are more public schools, more public school teachers, and far fewer nuns who don’t tend to molest anyone?

  • And out come the Catholic bashers!

We atheists just shake our heads in disbelief!!!!!!!!

  • Why is anyone surprised? … people who believe this medieval claptrap called religion mustn’t have brains to begin with … why else would so many members of the Catholic Church worldwide be child molesters?

  • Just read about the Whore of Babylon to see the RCC in the end times. Also the Letter to Thyatira refers to the RCC. The spirit of Jezebel is thick in RCC. John was amazed when the angel showed him all the blood of the saints shed by the RCC. She will be left behind in the Rapture. It’s just weird how you can call them out for worshiping idols and the deny it while praying to Mary, or a hank of hair, or a finger bone, and now I see a brain works in a pinch. There is but one Mediator and that is Christ Jesus. Mary can’t hear your prayer. A finger bone for an apostle can’t hear it either. Even if they could Jesus is the one that answers, …no one else.

If this isn’t a textbook case for idol worship, I don’t know what is. Read up on Ahab and Jezebel to see what God thinks of Baal.

  • Salesians “one of the Catholic Church’s most [sexual] abusive religious orders.”( Perhaps this was the act of one of their thousands of victims.

  • 500 years of ignorance, sloth, and bigotry. Luther was a vulgar loudmouth. One of his acquaintances described him as “ein blosser Bube” — a total jerk. Another said he was crazy. And he’s supposed to be a reformer?!

  • Wake up! Venerate is an euphemism for Idolatry.
Statues, Praying to saints, all stand between you and God.
He wants none of this. Did you forget the 1st few commandments?

  • God Himself has much to say about the results of worshiping the creature and where that leads.

  • Martin Luthers problem with the Catholic Church had nothing to do with relics. His main issue was the selling of indulgences that the church practiced in medieval period. Learn some history before you open your mouth

  • What, “pray tell”, does Roman Catholicism have to do with Christianity? They deleted the Second Commandment from their catechism, against making images and worshiping them, and SPLIT the Tenth Commandment into two to conceal the deception. Also, the Lord Y’shua (his God-given name: Hebrew for “he shall save” [Strong’s H3442] per the angel’s instructions in Matthew 1:21) COMMANDED that no one of his disciples call themselves “Father”. I speak as an EX-Catholic.

  • You know nothing about the Catholic Church. Your comments are full of disinformation and misstatements as you do not understand what Catholics actually believe, what we do and how we worship and pray.

We do not worship idols. We ask Mary to pray for us. The “Whore of Babylon” is not our Church.

Go back and read the early Church Fathers who established the Faith. Those who descended directly from the Apostles. Those in the early centuries who established the Catholic Faith, traditions and dogma. Not Luther, and the others who many Protestants today don’t even follow what they believe and wrote.

Christ gave authority to Peter and the Apostles to establish His Church and decide what and how it should be run and taught. “What ever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven”. Remember that ?

Also remember , “He breath on them and said, who sins you shall forgive they are forgiven, who sins you shall retain, they are retained”.

Direct evidence of authority to the Apostles and from them down through the ages to their successors. The Bishops and priests of the Catholic Church.

    No one else.

  • Person223, just a note to clarify the below statement about One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic b/c I don’t think you have ever understood it. ONE-unity or one belief in all essential or de fide dogmas; there is no disagreement. If someone dissents from these he defines himself out of the Church, and interestingly, never has a single de fide dogma been changed in the Catholic Church, ever, in 2000 years. None of your crappy little creeds can say the same. HOLY-the Church is a supernatural institution-the Bride of Christ, and as such is indefectible(whoops, dictionary time for you) and Holy even though all of her members as well as the rest of humanity are sinners to varying degrees. The one exception is the Theotokos (Greek for ” the Mother of God”) or the blessed Virgin Mary who had the singular honor of bearing the God/Man. Oh and the person-hood of Our Lord is Divine not human; though he has a human nature, a human body, human intellect and will and is fully human, all is hypostatically (sorry; it’s back to the dictionary for you, just try hypostasis before you work your way to the adverb) joined to his Divinity. His Person thus is Divine and yet still one in Being with the Father and the Holy Spirit; you may want to look up the difference between person and being since you are already in the dictionary. CATHOLIC-latin meaning universal, the Catholic Church is present in every nation on earth. APOSTOLIC-traceable in an unbroken line back to the Apostles. Do you just mouth the words at your church, are you asleep there or do you think and pray about them as well?

  • The only woman who needed contraception was your mother.

You are an excellent example of a walking ball of bitterness, ignorance, hatred and intolerance.

  • Holiness from God through his faithful ones gives God glory, you must understand this first.

  • Oh my, for 2000 years we have been duped, but you have set us free! When did you learn so much? Was it after the heretics of the 16th century founded your religion and trashed some Biblical books while making man-made laws and thousands of personal interpretations leading to thousands of denominations that none of you can agree on?

  • Pardon me while I examine the roots of your 10,000 denominations that contradict each other on Biblical interpretations from founders who can’t agree so they start a new church with personal interpretations of the Bible.

  • Why do you read an article that Catholics understand, but you don’t? Why do you comment on something you don’t understand?

  • And Luther, a heretic, baptized a Catholic, trashed several Biblical books because he didn’t like them. To us, this makes your religion heretical even today.

  • Indeed: “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with righteous judgment.” (John 7:24). We are given a plumbline by which to judge whether an action or practice is in accordance with His character and will, so that we can judge between wisdom and folly and walk in the way of truth while seeking to call others away from that which leads to death and into the way of life also.

  • Apparently you don’t understand my simple comment.
The headline was hyperbolic and distasteful, intending to reinforce a disrespect for our veneration of the saints and their relics.
That you don’t perceive that plain reality is in itself quite astounding.

  • Please excuse me. I did not understand the comment.
I think the headline was intended to attract readers because the article seems to report the story rather than ridicule like several comments here.

  • Do you keep anything around that reminds you of your dead loved ones? Do you have pictures of relatives who died? Even pictures of living family is creepy to some people in the world.
A personal item that belonged to them, do you keep their cremains on the shelf? Some people keep the hair and cherish it. Victorians took pictures of their dead loved ones while propping them up and appearing in the same family picture to keep around. Human nature wants to be close even to those loved ones who died, even more so when they were very holy.

  • Do you not serve God if you keep something of your loved ones near you? A picture, a keepsake, an article of clothing, a card, a letter, cremains or anything belonging to them? This is human nature and God, knowing how he made us, does not deny us those comforts for those we love.

  • No, this is the over-sexed society that is obsessed with physical pleasure that we live in today.

  • Catholicism is NOT my mother religion. Judaism is the mother religion just as Christ is Jewish. Salvation is of the Jews. The oracles of God came through the Jews. The RCC is a break off of Babylon. Nimrod invented it. His daughter’s name was Thyatira. Worship of Idols is the main trait passed down to the other denominations. There is the Kingdom of God and all others fall under Babylon. Traditions of men constitute all the denominations. I choose to call myself a “believer”. I believe the Scriptures of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Ask yourself if you have a statue of Mary in your house, in your church? Do you bow before it? Do you speak to it? Do you think saint so and so has any say in anything in Heaven? The Bible says I am a saint. It says I am of the Royal Priesthood. I don’t have to be “voted” in by men. Mary is just a woman that needed the blood of Jesus to cover her sins. Everyone is born in sin and needs saving. If Mary was sinless, Why would Jesus have to die? God would have told us to be as Mary was and you will live, but Jesus had to die on the cross. She didn’t die a virgin. Mary had other children it says plainly in Scripture. Jesus WILL NOT share His glory with anyone. The teachings in RCC is just false. There is no popes, nuns, or cardinals in Scripture. It’s all made up out of whole cloth. The Bible is very clear about salvation through faith. RCC seems to thing they have something to do with it. Around 400~ AD Constantine made Christianity the government religion and started to dismantle the church started by Jesus Christ. They changed the Calendar to confuse the Lord’s Feasts days. They changed the Sabbath from Sat to Sun which is a direct rebellion to the 10 Commandments. RCC changed the Lords days to Easter and Christmas rather than the real days of First Fruits and Tabernacles. In Zech 14:19 God will restore Tabernacles and the true Sabbath. 1Tim 4: 1-3 says forbidding to marry is the doctrine of demons. I could go on, but you probably wouldn’t change your mind because the RCC is over and above Christ in your mind. It has become you God over the God of the Bible. An idol is something you have carved out in your mind to replace the real God and Jehovah will punish as He has done throughout History. If your denomination is above Christ, then you will suffer just as Jezebel suffered. Whether your god is money, or your family, or your denomination, it’s all an idol that you have put before God. Jesus said to hate your mother and father or you can’t follow Him. He said to let the dead bury the dead, if you want to follow Him. Of course He doesn’t want you to hate your mother and father because there are rules for that. What He was saying was to put Him first and the rest will follow. There are people that forsake God for their children. Everything should be second after your service to God. That includes a denomination. ( traditions of men) Rituals done in church are just man made religion. God isn’t interested in religion. His desire for us is a relationship. Mush of the things done in the RCC is witchcraft. The whore of Babylon fornicated with every king of the earth. Name any other religion that has this in common other than RCC.

  • Unfortunately, the world is full of child sex trafficking, child porn and child abusers, molesters in their own homes and homosexuals who start on children first. Yes, it’s everywhere, even in churches. In public schools the teachings of sex to the very young is there too, and why?

  • Yes, but they don’t want to believe in an inconvenient truth when they have the CC for their whipping boy. Their hatred has to come out to make them feel better so they can hate some more. Must be terrible to live with.

  • No, Protestants came directly from Catholicism. That is your mother. Luther and the others didn’t break with the Judeo past, they broke off of their Catholic past, keeping what they wanted and trashing the rest.

The only Christianity on the face of the earth for 1500 years was Catholicism. If you look at the roots of Catholicism, you can say that it is based on the OT. The fulfillment of the OT was the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and Christianity was born.

Chuckles, it’s not what I believe in my religion that you should be so much against. When, if you look around, the world is growing in hatred for all Christians and people of faith. It is here in the US too.
It is not you or I that should find fault with each other, because Jesus wants us all to live in peace with each other. The attacks here by several, hide not that they hate the Catholic Church, but that they really are hating God. As hatred rises and tolerance for Christianity grows thin, all Christians may find ourselves outnumbered and looking for Christ in each other.

  • You are right that we must not judge where a soul will go, only God knows, but we must judge evil and right and wrong to avoid it and keep from falling into its traps, but you waste it on faithful Catholics, we know this.
The devil is the accuser of the brethren. You will change no one but you only encourage the ones here who hate all Christians. There is a growing paganism in the world today that is persecuting Christians and it will increase as atheism spreads. This is our enemy, the enemy of the followers of Christ. We may not meet in the same pew, but one day we may share the same persecution for the same Christ. You need only to scratch the surface of some here to know that those who criticize Catholic’s beliefs really are hating God.

  • You are far too kind. This operation is the epitome of anti-Catholicism. Do not be deceived.

  • I wasn’t judging Catholics. I was looking at the practice of revering the body parts of dead people, looking at Romans 1, and determining not to do that in light of God’s word.

  • I understand. It’s not easy to see that when there are so many unkind comments here.
The practice is not Catholic or Jewish or any one people, but it is part of our human nature to honor the dead, to want to be close to them in some way. We are forbidden by Christ to practice crafts that try to conjure up the dead, that’s wrong. In Christ we know that we will be with Him in heaven as believers and friends who love Him. We don’t worship the saints or Mary, no one but God, Jesus alone. We do love who Jesus loves. The first Christian relic was the Shroud that wrapped Jesus, the nails, the fragments of wood, the place of his birth and life, death and resurrection, we honor those things as very holy places. We don’t worship a cloth, but the one whose impression is on it, the one who loves us. When someone is holy, their whole body and soul is touched by God’s holiness as they become more like God in their soul. That’s why we protect their remains.

  • One can go through life without veneration of God’s saints and still serve God. That’s agreed. We(Catholics) know that holiness is not just a part of a soul, but the body becomes holy too and we love the saints as though they were our family. And yes, we do pray to the ones in heaven to ask for favors from God and God grants them sometimes. Too numerous to count are all the miracles and favors throughout the centuries that have occurred through the powerful intercession of the saints. Any honor we show the saints gives glory to God, because he worked in their lives to make them holy and they cooperated with His grace. The saints will be the first ones to tell us that. You will not agree, but I expect that.

  • Were tiny fragments of his brain stolen? Would that make the headline better? “Tiny Fragments of a Saint’s Brain Are Stolen and Catholics Pray for Their Return”?

  • And where did you receive your profound INTERPRETATION of scripture? By whose AUTHORITY?
    Maybe you should read Rev

[Rev 4:10] the twenty-four elders fall before the one who is seated on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever; they cast their crowns before the throne, singing, [Rev 4:11] “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
[Rev 5:13] Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” [Rev 5:14] And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped.
[Mat 17:1] Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves.[Mat 17:2] And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white.[Mat 17:3] Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.[Mat 17:4] Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

  • Those 1500 years are called the “Dark Ages”. For a reason. Only RC priests were allowed access to the Bible. Then Luther made things change. Biblical Christianity was once again able to read God’s Word. No where in The Bible is Catholicism recognized. Catholicism was created by man and made the official (and only) government approved “religion” several centuries after Christ died for our sins.

  • Wow! I never felt so blessed to be born a Catholic until I read your post. You poor souls. May God have mercy on you.

  • Ciao—No you are wrong.. Roman Catholicism is completely satanic. Jesus said you must be born again. If you are not born again you are not saved and going to hell. There is no purgatory nobody will pray you out. And yes the virgin Mary was just like the rest of us–a sinner. There are no Roman catholic Christians. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch Acts 11 v 26 KJV about 2000 years ago. Scrap you vatican versions of God’s word (they are false) and seek after truth—you’ll find when you seek with all your heart

  • Such ugly words I would not think of saying to you.

If you are a Christian, then talk like one.

    Begone Satan.

  • No, you make things up to fit. Through the first 300 years the persecution of the Church brought to mankind the saving blood of the martyrs through Jesus Christ which is the seed of faith and the faith did spread under the Holy Roman Empire.
Peter was the first pope and on this rock Jesus founded His religion. The successors of Peter are the popes.
I’m sorry, but the so-called “dark ages” were not dark. but was a modern derogatory label from those who hate Catholicism, terms to cast a dark shadow on the great contributions of the Catholic world through the centuries the Holy Roman Empire. Great building, art, music and science, universities, hospitals and spreading the Good News were just some of the great things that the “dark ages” brought to mankind through the Catholic Church.

  • I will not read anything that is written by someone who hates Catholics.
There always was sin, but the sin of child abuse is more rampant right now throughout the “civilized” world. The enemies of the Church only focus on what evil people have done in this past 50 years since the sexual revolution and the rise of acceptable homosexuality.

This sin is part of the sins of mankind from the beginning, and can be found in all the pagan societies of the world, but not as prevalent as it is right now in the world with the help of internet child porn.

Be careful what you read, not all is truth but tends to feed the frenzy of the enemies of the Catholic Church which only incites more hatred.

  • Through out the
entire New Testament period, and for 300 years afterward, there was
    no Catholic Pope.

    During these same
300 years, there was no Catholic Church.

    It was not until the
7th Century that the Bishop of Rome came to be referred to
    as the “Pope”.

There is no scriptural evidence that Peter was held in any more higher elevation than any of the other disciples. The Catholic Church uses Mat.
16:18-19 to justify Peter as the first Pope. Get out your Greek
dictionary and look up Peter. Peter is Petros which means a “piece
of the rock, a chip or splinter.

Scriptures (many) call Jesus Christ the Rock. Peter, like the other disciples, was a chip off the Rock.

Peter was married. In Matt. 8:14-15 Jesus healed the Mother of Peter’s wife who was sick of fever.

Many years later Peter was still married, for Paul refers to her in 1Cor. 9:5, where Peter is referred to as Cephas.

There is no evidence, literary, historical, archaeological, or Scriptural that Peter went to Rome, or was ever in Rome.

To summarize: The Catholic Church is founded on the claim that Peter was a Pope-the first Pope at Rome; that he was the Vicar of Christ; that he exercised Christ’s authority; and that all succeeding Popes inherit
this authority. None of which is backed up in God’s Word, the Bible. None of which is backed up as historically correct.

If Peter was the first Pope, who was the Second? Third?

Its a Historical fact that the dark ages were real and that during that period the Catholic Church burned at the stake (by the thousands) those who professed to follow Jesus Christ or were caught trying to read the

    Ciao, I wish you
well, but you are just wrong in so many of your beliefs. Read your
Bible, search scripture and pray that God help you to properly
discern His Truth. Seek and you shall find.

  • Here’s what I learned from this article: RNS cross-posts certain articles about Catholic beliefs somewhere that it brings out a heavy anti-Catholic response, ranging from typical evangelical apologetics to “THE CHURCH IS THE WHORE OF BABYLON!!!1!” They are also cross-posted somewhere that brings out the alt-right dead-enders who really, really hate CNN and for some reason Reza Aslan. I hope you guys are making money off this venture.

  • Or maybe, just maybe, the issue is child molesting priests and the bishops who cover up and enable them, a documented problem for at least 1000 years.

Maybe the problem is not the sexual revolution or an attempt to change the subject to “acceptable homosexuality”, whatever that may mean.

Out and proud gay men are not the problem, and never have been. Homosexual hating homosexuals and pedophiles who hang out in the church are the problem.

  • Homosexuals who start on children first? WE would call those people pedophiles. One more time, you are attempting to change the subject.

  • Ben child molesters don’t draw a morality line for themselves. But I don’t make this stuff up, it’s in published psychiatric articles.

It has hurt every good Catholic and every good priest and bishop to see what these criminals have done while in positions of trust and how they’ve dragged good Catholics through the mud because of their sins.
But as the Church cleans up, the problem is not going away in every country, religion, school, home and other places where children are to be found on this planet.
Bigots who hate the Church don’t want to look at the reality of the world they live in, as though it were safe for children everywhere but in the Catholic Church.

You do an injustice to God when you claim that Jesus did not institute His Church and give the keys to Peter, and tell him that the gates of hell would not prevail against it, that it would last until the end of time, and who sent the Holy Spirit to them gathered together to give them wisdom and love and grace promising the Holy Spirit would be with them till the end of time.
Read the Scripture, you would see plainly that Peter did head the Church until he was martyred.
BTW, all of these popes since Peter were martyrs and holy saints. You should be grateful to God for what He has done to provide the world with these holy men who took the keys of the Church and were faithful to promote and protect His holy Gospels with love for Him and with their lives, that have come down to us through time.

I wish you wisdom Wyostk You can’t accept the historical record because you would have to admit that your Protestant Church owes even the Bible itself to the efforts, protection, promotion and copying done by the Catholic Church for 1500 years.

  • I believe that there is ample evidence that children who live with a stepfather or live in boyfriend home have a hi rate of abuse.

Sexual abuse has been with the “world” from the beginning.

Child predators are not men and women of any moral conscience.

There is psychiatric researched evidence that some homosexuals start abusing children first.
You are wrong. Homosexuality is not confined to adults. Just look at their parades, they’ve featured young boys!! Schools have clubs where lgbt kids can meet. Some public schools have been encouraging young children to explore other genders.

Man/boy relationships is an organization that wants the same recognition that homosexuals and transgenders are getting. Google Nambla, you can also pick up some of these stories on LifeSiteNews.

What do you think this lgbt teaching in schools does to little children? It sexualizes them in their immature minds and gets them ready for adult predators. Wake up this is the real world, not the past, it is now.

  • I agree with you about the damage done to children, society, and church by the abuse and the coverups. From that aspect, it doesn’t matter whether it is within the church or not. It is a serious issue.

The issue is conflating sexual abuse of children with adult homosexuals. They are not same thing.the vast and overwhelming majority of gay people are every bit as horrified and disgusted by is as heterosexuals. But the evidence also says that around half of the abuse is done by fathers, step fathers, and father surrogates, one fourth by someone the child knows, and one quarter by “other.”

  • It would be a better world if children were safe, but it’s not getting safer for them and abortion has contributed to the lack of society’s protection for all children and governments who are supposed to protect them, don’t make it their priority it seems.

It is still questionable for children to be adopted by homosexuals that deprives them of the advantage of at least one father and one mother to help them develop well in society.
Is love enough? Will the child be directed toward the one gender and be deprived of the beneficial influence of both? Even if there is just one parent, that in itself is not a danger to kids, but does have some lasting effects on children, but this is not a perfect world.

  • ben in oakland, Your note lists several candidates for “the problem” or “a problem”. Please be reminded that there is plenty of blame to go around, and fixing one (such as unequal job security for LGBT people) doesn’t fix the others.

  • Keys to the “Kingdom of Heaven” .
M’t:16:18: And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
M’t:16:19: And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
M’t:16:20: Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
M’t:16:21: From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
M’t:16:22: Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
M’t:16:23: But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
No where in either the Old Testament or New is the Catholic Church mentioned. All those who believed on Jesus Christ as the only way to salvation were referred to as The Church, or Body of Christ, or Bride of Christ. All the Saints you list above were , I hope, good and God fearing men…but they were still….just men. They were declared Saints only by other men (Popes) who were declared Pope by other men….not, God.
Wish you well ciao, but I don’t wish to argue any further. To do so would only create hard feelings and accomplish (it appears) nothing.
Take care ciao and thanks for the thought provoking discussion.

  • I have to get the last word in. Nowhere in the entire Bible are Protestants mentioned.

Do you know what catholic means?
    It simply means universal.
To be one, holy, catholic and apostolic is what Jesus asked them to do
    : ) ciao Wyostk

  • It’s not the slightest bit questionable about the ability of gay people to raise children– unless you discount forty years of research into the subject, 95% of which has concluded just the opposite.

As for having a father and a mother? Just about Every scamvangelist, gang member, rehab clinic resident, criminal, Muslim jihadist, Christian terrorist, drug lord, porn star, and congressman had one of each.

    Try again.

  • Ben in Oakland disregard my inset inside the parenthesis. Fixating on what has been done to you or your cohorts doesn’t settle much!

  • Can you people never, ever JUST STOP IT?

This constant attempt to tie gay people to sexual abuse of children is silly and sick. The great majority of sexual abuse is heterosexual in nature, fully half of it fathers, step fathers, or father surrogates.

Your psychiatric evidence that homosexuals start abusing Children first not only doesn’t mean anything, it’s not true in any sense of the word. The only thing it is evidence of is that either you are woefully ignorant, Ron eec psychiatric help.

You’re right about one thing, despite your vile attempts to twist it into something dirty. Homosexuality is not confined to adults. I know you will find this impossible to believe, but mostly because you don’t wish to: there are such things as gay kids. I knew I was gay when I was three. Most of the people I have known in my life have always known they were gay.

Learning that there are gay people does not sexualize children any more than learning there are heterosexuals does. Tha’s like saying jay ifvthe learn about other religions, they will stop being Christians.

Lifesite news? Well, of course. That exp’ains EVERYTHING. You cannot or will not educate yourself,

  • You’re inferring answers I never provided. So . . . be sure to thank your single mom for sending you to awesome government schools?

  • An eight-year-old Montreal boy who performs as a “drag queen” under the stage name “Lactatia.” Werq of the world drag queen tour Del Rio says, “Lactatia … I love the fact that you’re here. What I love most about this is that your mom is here with you, supporting you,” says Del Rio, In a “Best Kept Montreal” video (now approaching 700,000 views), Del Rio jokes about giving the boy “a shot” (of liquor) and calls him a “bitch.”
Lactatia applying the typical drag putdown-vernacular he says, “I think that anyone can do what they want in life. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. … If you want to be a drag queen and your parents don’t let you, you need new parents.”

  • Perhaps we should do a little research about all of the antigay Christian demonstrators who have their kids right on the front lines holding signs that say “god hates fags”, as well as all of the other vileness hiding behind those nice christian smiles?

I know which parents between the two examples I would prefer.

  • I have nothing against you personally Ben. God loves all the souls He has created and wills that all will be saved.
We’ll find bad parents everywhere. The parents who put their children in these positions are being bad parents, not protective and caring for the good of the child but, like the one in the video and the child holding the sign, these parents are making their children do what they want for themselves. Jesus said, “Whoever causes one of these little ones to sin, it would be better for them if a milestone were tied around their necks and they were cast into the sea.” So much does God love little children.
I hope that you would prefer neither parent in our examples Ben, but good parents. That’s my point.

  • Being “forbidden” to use his credentials by prelates is to his credit. Just another effort by Church officials to discredit victims of clerical sex abuse and their advocates. Fits the pattern.

  • He was forbidden because (1) he took money without providing service and (2) he filed frivolous material which did not advance his client’s cases but was designed to get national press attention.

He was also ordered to return the clients’ money so they could hire competent counsel.

Yes, his behavior fits the pattern: incompetence, showboating, and attention-getting but not competent representation.

  • Unproven lies. As I stated, “Just another effort by Church officials to discredit victims of clerical sex abuse and their advocates.”
