PSR stands for radical inclusivity: a call for change at UMC’s General Conference

A statement from Pacific School of Religion, a progressive Christian seminary and graduate school with a 150+ year history of social justice advocacy

Pacific School of Religion (PSR) recognizes the profound significance of this moment as delegates from around the world gather for this year’s General Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC). As an institution deeply committed to radical inclusivity with a 150+ year history of progressive Christian action, we stand steadfastly in support of removing discriminatory language from the UMC’s policies.

PSR recognizes every individual’s inherent dignity and worth, irrespective of their identities, and we firmly believe this discriminatory language contradicts the teachings of love and compassion exemplified by Jesus Christ.

We also acknowledge the pressing need for global equity within the UMC Church and the wider world. Through a lens of justice, we advocate for worldwide regionalization to ensure that the voices and concerns of all communities are acknowledged and addressed.

In this moment of reflection and action, let us unite in prayer for all of the delegates, including many PSR alumnx, seeking God’s guidance and wisdom as they navigate the complexities of the Church’s future. Let us also extend our support to the newly formed United Methodist Queer Delegate Caucus, embracing their efforts toward inclusivity and reconciliation.

For those who want to stay informed and engaged, we encourage you to follow the proceedings of the General Conference at ResourceUMC. Together, let us persist in our pursuit of a Church and a world where everyone is embraced, celebrated, and affirmed.
