Bread for the World will continue its 40th anniversary celebration with the much-anticipated National Gathering and Lobby Day June 9-10 in Washington, D.C. Under the theme “Bread Rising: Working Together to End Hunger by 2030,” the events will take place at Georgetown University Hotel and Conference Center, 3800 Reservoir Road NW, Washington, DC 20007.
“Behind our four decades of achievements for hungry people are strong activists, friends, and supporters working tirelessly to eradicate hunger and poverty in their communities, their country, and around the world,” said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. “It’s important that we not only celebrate where we came from and who helped us along the way; we must also map out how we will merge our collective talents, contacts, and faith to get the job done in 15 years.”
Each June, Bread for the World’s gathering attracts an impressive roster of speakers, teaching participants about key issues impacting hungry people. This year’s program will educate activists on issues of immigration, mass incarceration, and sustainable food security.
Speakers range from policy experts to faith leaders, includingDana Hyde, the new CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC); Dr. Manuel Pastor, professor of sociology and American studies and ethnicity at the University of Southern California; Rick Steves, travel expert and longtime Bread activist; Gaby Pacheco, DREAMer and immigration-rights leader; Desmond Meade, returning citizen and PICO state director; Rev. Gabriel Salguero, president of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition; Rev. Nicta Lubaale, Kenyan pastor and food-security champion; and Tonya Rawe, CARE policy advocate.
On the evening of June 9, National Gathering participants, activists, local champions, members of Congress, media, and other friends and supporters will celebrate four decades of working together to end hunger at Bread for the World’s 40th anniversary dinner.
The following day, participants will have the chance to put what they’ve learned into action at Bread for the World’s annual Capitol Hill Lobby Day. Bread policy analysts will explain how reforms to U.S. food aid and immigration impact hungry and poor people in the United States and around the world. They will then lead participants to the Hill to urge their members of Congress to reform U.S. food-aid programs and our broken immigration system. Those who are unable to join activists on the Hill are asked to participate in the organization’s virtual Lobby Day by committing to call their members of Congress about these issues.
