Swastika painted on Duke mural honoring synagogue victims

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke University officials say someone painted a Nazi symbol on a mural honoring victims of last month's Pittsburgh synagogue massacre.

University president Vincent Price said in a letter to the school community that a red swastika was painted Sunday night (Nov. 18) on the tribute to those who died in the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue. The East Campus Bridge and tunnel underneath are spaces where students can paint messages ranging from campus event promotions to memorials.

Price condemned the swastika as cowardly vandalism.

Price said increased security will continue at campus locations including the Freeman Center for Jewish Life.

He also said security cameras will be installed at the bridge because of hateful messages. The Chronicle student newspaper reported that a Latin Heritage mural was defaced in September.

  1. The 57% rise in anti-Semitic hate crimes from 2016 to 2017 is no accident. According to the Anti-Defamation League, that is the largest single-year jump on record. Something or someone has given these bigots license, or at the very least tacit approval, to spout their hate with unfettered abandon. Gee, now who might that be?

  2. Just because it’s called Duke University doesn’t mean jerks can act like David Duke there.

Heck the Methodists own the University.

  3. Maybe it was done by someone like James Polite, who on November 1 spayed Nazi graffiti on a Synagogue in Brooklyn. Polite is a gay, black Democratic activist. Gee, no word of any connection between him and President “who might that be”.

  4. From the New York times of 11/3/18:

Man’s Struggles With Mental Illness and Addiction Preceded Hate Crimes Charges, Friends Say.

  5. Leave it to the New York Times to engage in excuse-making for a gay, black, Democratic activist and nail anyone with a gun as a right-wing lunatic.

    Spin, spin, spin, spin.

  6. Mark/Jose/bob/Draco/DIrk…

I realize that it is pointless to respond to you, so if you don’t mind, I think I will respond to people who have actual points to make, and evidence to support them.

  7. Indeed, and meanwhile I’ll continue to point out that you don’t have actual points to make.

    That works for everyone.

  8. Methodists don’t seem to have ever been the sort that would say no to educating others. IIRC they do have a controlling share of ownership.

  9. Wow! Someone has not a single accurate fact about the relationship between Duke University and the United Methodist Church.

  10. Were you hit very hard in the back of the head by a shovel or something?

  11. Any evidence that the guy doesn’t have a history of mental illness?

  12. Funny how the self-anointed moral paragon engages in the repeated mendacity of switching identities rather than respect the terms of service.

  13. Like many of histype, he willtell you that he never appointed himself a moral paragon. Technically. I suppose that might be true in the sense that he probably never has explicitly written “I am a moral paragon”. Just like he used to claim that he never revealed he was a catholic when writing as Bob Arnzen, even though it was obvious.

    Oh, well.

  14. Any evidence everyone that the New York Times does NOT make excuses for doesn’t have a history of mental illness?
